Off to Biloela

We head for Biloela tomorrow - hopefully leave Lochlea around mid afternoon. We are going to give Squirt a hand with the angels while Mother Edwina is off to a week in Gladstone for a school course. We should be back this coming weekend.

Our house is painting up nicely with the front finished and the side where you drive in also all painted clean and bright including polishing the floor with three coats of Ultradeck. It really does look good. Dad is now mowing in all sorts of places.

The crop looks good but there are quite a few dead heads and this has us a bit worried. We would not have a clue what has caused it, as the rain has been good. They are talking about rust in crops in the area, but that does not seem to be the problem.   Just have to keep on hoping and praying.

We had a good few days helping Mary to move into our unit.  She has not been real well, spilled some cleaning stuff on her face and did not get it off properly. Anyway, I was talking to her this afternoon and she is now much better. She has a lovely little grass area alongside her unit with gum trees rising high above the fence and an old lounge chair to sit on. She said she was out enjoying it with a wine and cheese. (Doesn't sound like Mary!)

We had sad news when we arrived home. A fox (and probably her babies) had tried to dig under the fence in two or three places and eventually managed to get under the wire. Rooster, Hen and four chickens were killed, all except for one little half grown chick. The rotton things had just chewed the heads off two of the other chickens and only half ate the rooster.  It would not have been so bad if they were hungry and looking for a feed.  One of our neighbours said that they lost six full grown hens that they had not long bought for over $100.

Visit by Pete & Boys

Pete here - blogging on behalf of slack parents.
I really do believe that one day they will do a blog entry of their own. :)

The four boys and I drove out to see the folks at the farm this weekend, leaving Alli at home to have a sanity break. It has been raining a lot in Brisbane and it looks like the farm has received a good sprinkle too. Actually, the farm is as lush & green as I can ever recall seeing it. Mum & Dad have one of their best crops ever. If they had corn, it would be as high as an elephant's eye, but it's wheat. :) The house dam is overflowing and running down the road before becoming a creek again.
I like the green farm much better than the brown farm I have to say. If it was always like this, I'd contemplate becoming a farmer, but I've seen too much brown in the past.

We drove out on Saturday and went to church that night. Father Michael greeted us at the door afterward. I think we have been to his church more than we have been to the one in Brissy.

The boys and I had a ball playing around the dam and down the flooded road all weekend. The boys also had a fun time in the treehouse searching for treats left by the fairies. Grandma & Grandad also have some little chicks which the boys were excited to play with, although they did scare the chicks half to death. :(

Mum took the boys over to visit the Sloss's who are neighbours. They have a horde (or even a hoard) :) of kittens and puppies. The boys loved it. They often ask if they can have a puppy or a cat, but we are worried about what we would do whenever we go away on holiday or away for the weekend. The Sloss girls are so good at looking after our boys whenever they visit. They are all lovely girls.

Poor young Mr Riley was fairly miserable all weekend and needed to be constantly cuddled. Grandma & Grandad had to do a fair bit of this as I was off with the boys a fair bit. Fairly sure he's sick but will have to wait for a diagnosis.

We even managed to go fishing in the dam just before we left, but it was the middle of the day and not much was biting - although we could see fish jumping occasionally. We did find quite a large blue claw in the water - presumably from a decent sized yabby.

The boys were very sad to go home as always. Thanks Mum & Dad for helping with a miserable bubby all weekend !

Winter Rain

We had 50 mm of lovely gentle rain for the past 24 hours which brings us up to 97.5 mm for the past 2 weeks so the crop should be set up for a good finish - we just have to pray that the locust plague stays away as they can decimitate a crop overnight.

The water is flowing through the dam to the creek beyond. Not a real flood, just a great flow. Lots of water along the road.

Front of House Painted

A couple of photos of front of house - still have to finish a couple of things and clean up the mess.

Twas a little cold this morning

Pat went out to the recently sanded and coated back landing this morning and just about slipped off. She called out to Brian to come and check out how slippery and dangerous it was when wet with dew and then as she proceed to really 'take off' realized that she was in fact ice-skating! No, it wasn't really cold, has been much lower, as it was only .5 of a degree on the verandah - has been down to -5 this year.
Painters are hard at work still out the front, but should finish today. Looking great.

Painting Weekend (well not quite)

Pete blogging on behalf of slack parents. ;)

I drove out to the farm this weekend with the four boys. Dad is in the process of re-painting the whole house and I thought I could help out a bit. We arrived on Friday night, stuck the boys in bed and watched the Broncos lose the footy (no Darren Lockyer!).

The next morning, we got into the sanding down of some of the old paint. Thought we would just do the flaky bits, but it turned out that most of it was no good. Thus we spent the rest of the weekend mostly just sanding! At least it was nice cool weather for working in. Summer would have been nasty! Anyway, we only got a part of the house sanded. This is going to be a big job - probably completed in a few stages. :)

Mum did sterling work looking after the boys all weekend as well as a lot of cooking and cleaning. I'm sure it gave her unpleasant flashbacks to when she had eight kids. :) I know sanding is sure easier than entertaining four little boys.

Mary was also there to lend a hand once again. She has been a big help to Mum and Dad. Of course we could never repay all the things they have done for us over our lifetime.

A Grandkid catch up for the Grandkids

Kurtis and Blair came out with Les and Deb for the weekend of 21/23rd May and we had a lovely time with them.  We all went to mass on the Saturday night in Dalby and Grandad declared Blair the best grandkid at Church.  This was mainly due to the fact that there were 30 young people receiving Confirmation and Communion - took one and a half hours and we heard hardly a peep from Blair - good on you Blair.  He began kindy last week in Brisbane.   Kurtis seems happy in his new school at Mansfield High. We hear that he does a lot of texting these days to a friend in Dalby .... NO ... not a girl friend! Part of he primary school next door to them burned down that weekend.
Alex, Pat, Harry and Riley all came to the farm with Dad on 28/30th May. We had a prayer around the table.  Grandad reminded Grandma that Harry had asked to go first.  He lit his candle, closed his eyes and said something to the effect of  'I wish that I had a little puppy. I would really love to have a little puppy. (at this stage Grandma whispered don't forget a prayer for Mummy and hardly drawing breath, he continued..) And Mummy would really like a puppy too! So Cute!  On Sunday we all went to the cubby house and lit a fire down in the paddock and toasted marshmallows that the boys had brought out.
Nyrie rang Grandma this morning and had a lovely talk. She wanted to know if we had been over to check the cubby to see if there were any lollies from the fairies!  She has been home from school with a bad virus.  Another little girl in her class has scarlet fever, so they were being fairly careful in case she might have it also, but the doctor said he did not think so. Jacob  is enjoying his Prep year.  He and Nyrie have been doing a little bit of moto cross riding with  Josh  who has been riding most weekends at different places.  We even caught up with Timothy when they raced in Mackay. Tash and Aaron are making a trip to Brisbane next week to check see some land for sale on Russell Island. We hope to catch up with them.
It's two whole months since we went to Airlie. Chris, now 18 is a young man, as is Jarred. They are great kids (even if they are young men!) and we enjoyed catching up with them and shared a lovely meal at the sailing club on Chris's birthday. Jarred, now grade 12, hopes to be able to go on the Rotary Sailing Ships trip (can't think of the name of it). He is known to use his Mum's pup to catch the eye of the little ladies around the place. Chris is enjoying his computer traineeship - at least the practical side of it. I think that he is having trouble finding time for the TAFE section of it. Some prayers would be great. Keep praying that Jo and Pete will be able to hang on until the sale of their shop happens as things are really hard for them.
Sheree and Bugs are keeping busy with their renovations.  They are doing such a wonderful job. Bugs was trying his hand at plastering and from all accounts doing quite well with it. Sheree has a real gift and besides painting and things she just manages to add the right touches to make each room special. Dogs, Penny and Max and Boris the cat, are all doing well and the bird makes his presence felt whenever Bugs is talking on the phone! He has to get it a treat of some sort to get it to be quiet!!
We were so delighted to have a call from New Zealand with four beautiful voices singing: ".. I see the moon  .....over the mountain over the sea .....  Please let the light ...." - brought tears to Grandma's eyes. Phoebe, Caleb, Josh and Lachlan all seem very happy with their new country, school, sports etc. etc. and next weekend will be settled into their new rental home over there - close to the same school and church that they go to now. Mel is busily working her Pilates classes and building quite a business once more. James is enjoying being a Handyman/Gardner but fighting the wet weather at times these days. They need a prayer for a good tenant for their Toowoomba home. They have decided to take it off the market and rent it for 6-12 months.
Maverick and Charlie are two of our very reliable pray-ers!  Mind you, I think Mum and Dad may get nagged a bit at times. Mav is doing very well at school and obviously enjoying it.  Charlie is keeping them entertained at day care. The chooks are still very loved last I heard. The family is looking at a house that they would like to buy so some prayers there also, please.
Last we heard of Einie (luv u Puppy), he was eyeballing a pretend bird that his mother had put in his cage! Wasn't very impressed! Mary continues to do well at her job at Ellis Equipment and enjoys it. She must do some kind of sport just about every night - tennis, squash, and kick boxing thing (don't know the name, but it sounds rough!)  We are hoping that she will be here tonight (after sport!) It is always a joy to see her.

Back from Airlie Beach

We are slowly coming back to earth with the BAS done; Religion Lesson almost ready for tomorrow; and most of the unpacking underway! We arrived home on Friday afternoon, just over three weeks from when we left.

We had a good but busy time away and although we found the Mullers well, they are carrying an incredibly heavy load at the moment and really need a prayer every day that they might work together to find a light at the end of the tunnel. Please keep them in your prayers. We had a lovely night out with the family and their special friends, Cita and Dougie to celebrate Chris's 18th birthday. We will have to await a report from Mullers or Sheree and Bugs to hear about the 'party' that was held at home on Saturday night. Mind you, I believe that we might never hear the true story!

We had an urgent plea for prayer - from Jo - this afternoon.  Please ask God to help Pete and the boys to find the snake that Jarred has spotted inside the house. Yep, they found it, all six foot of it, and managed to get rid of it.

Lovely to catch up with our Mackay and Glenden families for some hours and will write more about them later. Love you all. Mum for Dad and Mum

March 2010 - Family Update

A family once asked me 'do you do birds in the prayer department'. We did! Now I ask you all, "Do you do dogs?"  Please say prayers that Bugs and Sheree find their dogs, along with Sheree's Mum's dog.  All disappeared from the McKay's yard just after they arrived in Dalby, from Mackay last Friday evening.  Bugs called here on Saturday morning and we were away, so we have not caught up with him yet. They enjoyed the wedding that they went to on the Sunshine Coast yesterday. We are looking forward to their coming out next week.

If anyone is chasing Mary. She said to let you know that she left her phone at home(Probably Julie's place) She and Julie have gone to Moreton Island where Julie (Jankowski) is taking part in a long swim today. They went to some naughty play yesterday - not sure of title, but it was banned in overseas countries! Not our Mary!

Last week, Les began work at Chris' IGA, a Super IGA store in Carina, not far from Carindale shopping centre. He said that it is a really good store run by a greek family, one son manages the grocery section and another the fresh produce.  He and Deb are currently shopping to buy a house and have been checking out the places that are open for inspection.  Kurtis has settled into school at Mansfield State High, but got off to a bad start when he got a really bad bug and missed  a couple of days. Hope he is well again soon. Blair spoke to me today - with a mouth full of popcorn! He is growing up.

Please roll out the prayers for the Auction of James and Melissa's house at 3 Vacy Street this Saturday at 12 midday - There was a great, almost full page, spread in the Real Estate Section of yesterday's Chronicle.   Dad and I have a wedding to attend in Dalby that afternoon, but hope to go to Toowoomba for the auction first. The agent was there for Open house when we drove past yesterday, so we stopped and spoke with him.  He seems to have been very good in keeping the place tidy, mowing lawns etc - all beyond the call of duty! I think that I sent you a copy of the NZ grandchildren in uniform.

So lovely to have Alli and Pete's boys and Peter here last weekend.  They are such a great lot of kids.  I highly recommend a read of their Blog http://allipete.blogspot.com/. It will fill you in on their farm visit and so much more.  Thanks for the great reading Alli and Pete.  Alli stayed home for a relaxing weekend??? of painting etc etc oh and she also organized a party and entertained her lady friends. Quiet weekend, Alli???

Sad news from Biloela late last week when Edwina rang to say that their neighbour, landlord and friend, Keith  Keegan, who lives up behind them had died.  Apparently he was out contract baling hay and the lady from the property where he was working, noticed that the tractor was stationary for some time.  When she went down, she found him dead, slumped over the steering wheel of the tractor.  He must have realized that he was  in trouble as he had turned the tractor off. Charlie and Mav were always saying, 'here comes Keithie" It must have been a big shock for his wife, Helen. Squirt is still at the Power House. Ed is teaching a grade 6 class this year and finding the going a bit tough, as most school teachers are these days. Charlie is a member of the local dancing school and loving every minute of it. Mav was given extra words for homework the other week, 'cos he was just too good!

Hopefully you all know that Natasha is wearing a ring on her finger these days.  Less than six months till she and Aaron 'tie the knot' at the family camp in September. Hope you are busy with plans you two.  Is there anything that we can do?  It seems that Jake has settled in well to being a 'preppie' and despite changes of teachers after the kids started school, Nyrie seems settled in once more. Lovely news to hear that Josh is doing a school based traineeship with the mines.  He and his mate were the two chosen by the company - a wonderful effort.

Pete Muller is suffering badly with back+ problems. Please keep him in your prayers and ask the good Lord to send along a buyer for the Five Star Supermarket in Cannonvale. Jarred is still not 100% with his toe - far from it actually. Just this minute had a call from Jo.  They eventually cleared the road down. There were trees everywhere. She said that there are huge trees all over Mt Julian - torn out by the roots. One from their place had fallen on the house of the man next door, so they also helped him clear it away. Pete is just getting ready to go in to the shop to check things out. Chris is really enjoying his computer traineeship.

Sorry for the long long review, but it is some time since I managed to do something like this! Dad and I are really enjoying life.  I have finished making and icing the wedding cake for Greg and Ashlee - at long last. Wet weather did not help. We brought a second hand mower yesterday - Dad has not yet been able to get it started but has lots of work lined up for it. We have been attending the Lenten program in our little local Church in Bowenville and it has been really great with between 7 to 9 people coming along each week. We have had lots of visitors and really enjoyed them.  Mary; Peter and Boys; Cathy and Tim Stitt; Margaret and Dennis Kelly; and Gordon Coward, were the most recent to stay with us.

All's Well Up North

Cyclone Ului has now passed by our families and thank God, all have survived with very little damage.
Jo said to say thanks a lot to all of you for the prayers. She, Peter and boys moved bedding into the laundry area and spent the night there. They said that the winds were absolutely unbelievable and they spoke of the incredible sudden calm as the eye of the cyclone passed over their area.  Trees have fallen over the road up to the house and the power line has also come down across the track, so they are in lock-down mode at home - lets hope they enjoy an enforced break. With power out in Airlie Beach/Cannonvale areas, their freezers and refrigerators will all be defrosted as it seems the powers that be are saying that it will be a few days before the power will be able to be reconnected. Chris talked with his mate from down the road at Mt Julian, last night, and they had just lost the roof of their house. Jo sent compliments to the builder of their home, (Uncle Steve Cook) as she said there was no movement at all and they just felt perfectly safe.

Bugs and Sheree left Mackay to come down for Sheree's brother, Greg's wedding to Ashlee Gooding.  They were most concerned because a month earlier they had decided to cancel their old insurance and transfer to Suncorp.  It had all been arranged to happen on the date the old policy expired. Anyway when they checked to confirm that they were covered for cyclone damage they were told that there was a 72 hour wait.  The rang the old company to extend their cover with them and were told it was too late as the policy had been cancelled (even though it was not supposed to expire till the next day). Hence they were leaving an uninsured house in the track of a cyclone.  Thank God all went well. A neighbour rang them this morning to say that all was well.  A portion of interior pool fencing had come down and there were a few other minor matters but in all everything is OK.

Finally as Ului wound its way to the west, it spread its cyclonic winds to Glenden. Tash said that they fared well.  Their sun-sail was blown down and the neighbours trampoline ended up thrown onto their fence, trees down all along the street, but no major damages.
Aaron wanted to go tie down his Bike trailer, but he wasn't allowed!

WildLife

Pete blogging for parents - who continue to be too busy to blog.  :)

I took the boys out to the farm for a visit as it has been quite a while.  Mum is suffering grandchild withdrawal symptoms since the Toowoomba Bryants (Jim) have moved to New Zealand and the Dalby Bryants (Les) have moved to Brisbane.

We got to the farm Friday night in time for dinner and soon had the boys packed into bed for the night.  We knew they would be up early as they always are at the farm, and Grandma promised the boys a walk.  The next morning the boys were off with Grandma at the crack of dawn and were back quite a while later with tales of flooded creeks and wild pigs.  Apparently they saw a mother pig and babies.  Lagoon creek is still running from rain which finished more than a week ago.  The whole countryside is soaked and it is lovely to see it that way for a change.  Luckily, Mum & Dad had the house dam dug out just before all the rain hit, so it is now nice and deep.

In the afternoon, we went down to the dam and saw a snake swimming along the creek where it followed the road.  We were able to walk along at a safe distance and observe the snake's excellent swimming action.
After the dam it was bath time, dinner time and then off to church.  Unfortunately I let the big boys pack their own shoes and it seemed that Alex packed only gumboots - now very wet and muddy.  As grandma had nothing to fit him, it was off to church with bare feet.  Not to worry I supposed not many people would notice once we were sitting down.  The boys picked our seat - right at the very front of the church.  Then a lady asked Mum if she would do the offertory procession with the boys.  So I reckon the whole church saw the poor little urchin Alex who had no shoes!
The boys behaved themselves reasonably well on the bribe of ice-cream at MacDonalds if they were good.
Harry was a bit silly, but what do you expect from a 2 year old ?   :)

Family News

Just a quick note which your mother had good intentions of sending before she got side tracked once again. Have attached a couple of photos of the vehicle we bought - a ford explorer 1998 model but in really good order and set up well for towing heavier loads. We had 49mm of rain on Monday night which was very welcome as they have promised us rain many times lately without any result.
We had Craig and Jo-anne Cavanagh and their two children - Chloe and Cory here overnight Monday and most of Tuesday - they are setting off on another around Australia tour - towing a fairly large Caravan - they are heading for Melbourne first and then up to Suplejack for Cameron and Leisa's wedding before heading on to WA.
Hope you are all well - Mum was speaking to Annette (Debs Mum) this morning - I think she is staying put at the moment - too wet to go out - it sure got a bit wet around Brissy yesterday - did you get to go to work today Pete - did you hear that part of Petes work place flooded yesterday so they got sent home. Pete and Alli have fared Ok with the rain - we understand that so far there has been no seepage into their new downstairs bedroom area.
Had some nice photos of Jim and Mel's kids heading off to schoolin NZ - will send them on some time.
Edwina has School camp the week before the family reunion so we are heading up there to help babysit while she is away so will probably go on from there to Mackay.
We went over to Kingaroy after the Bell show ball last Friday night. Mary drove us to Brissy on Saturday so that we could buy the car. She visited her old mate Les and we went on to visit Pete and Alli before we came back to her place Saturday night - haven't heard how her date with Russel went on Sunday night.
Les and Deb were with Jo and Pete when mum spoke with them - they will be heading home to Brissy shortly I think as Annette has Doctors appointments next week so keep her in your prayers.
Tash rang to say that the sale of their Mackay home is on track - settlement is on the 2nd or 3rd March I think. Oh by the way did you know that she is now officially engaged - she has a ring on her finger.
Haven't heard much from Bugs and Sheree except that they were busy renovating on Saturday - was the air blue when the cornice wouln't stick Sheree?
Uncle George called over yesterday on his way to Chinchilla where Bernadette is overdue to have a baby - Aunty Col is already out there and was sure that it would arrive last night - but no news at this stage.
Uncle Steve Cook still laid up with a crook back which went on him when he was out here fencing for David Johns about 10 days ago.
Haven't heard from Jo and Pete as to whether their Indian Buyer showed up yesterday - the window had been fixed so hope everything went OK.
Not much other news except that Mother is suffering from the flu - she has even taken "DRUGS" today.
Must away
Love to all Dad.

NZ Population Increase

Dad and I went to the international airport in Brisbane early yesterday morning, Saturday, 23rd January, (having travelled to 25 Copenhagen Street the day before) to farewell James and Melissa, Phoebe, Caleb, Joshua and Lachlan. When we communicated with them on our way home, yesterday after lunch, they were safely in their new country and all out for a walk in 12 degree temperature of Christchurch city, New Zealand.
James asked me to say goodbye from himself and the family. We will certainly miss having them living so close. Mel's sister Claire had brought her Mum and her girls to the airport to say goodbye, and Mel's sister, Shona and friend Robyn were there also, along with friends of the family, so there was quite a gathering.
Please say some prayers that their house in Toowoomba will sell very soon - along with the two vehicles and the motor bike. The house looks great after the hard work of the past 4/6 weeks. Yes, they did get all completed by Friday around luch time! We spoke to the real estate agent who was in the front yard when we drove past on our way home, and he had already had a couple of parties go through.

Dad's Accident

I had a call from Dad this morning soon after they arrived down in Toowoomba to continue to work with James. Leslie has also been with him for the past three days.

This morning when they were travelling in a line of traffic on the Warrego Highway, near Charlton, approximately 14 klms from Toowoomba, the traffic slowed to a stop and a gentleman in a van behind Dad failed to notice what was happening and despite a loud squeal of brakes was unable to stop and ploughed into the back of our Falcon Station Wagon. Thank God, no one was hurt. Whilst Dad noticed the van and realized that it was unlikely the fellow would be able to stop, Les was somewhat relaxed and did not realize was was going on - Dad said he got a bit of a fright.

The other vehicle was barely damaged, but the Falcon is pretty bad. Rear Tailgate and passenger back panel were both damaged and both windows were smashed; tail and turning lamp assembly was smashed; Rear bumper bar was pushed forward and cracked. Petol filler cap was smashed - Dad's comment, 'just as well I filled up yesterday, as I would not be able to get fuel in today; rear floor panel on LHS was rippled but not broken; Rego sticker and Protection panel from top of tailgate were both missing; In all, quite a mess, but they were still able to drive and have spent the day a 3 Vacy Street working with Jim.

It is 8.10pm and they are not home yet. Dad was hoping to finish down there today so as he can give Les a hand with his trailer tomorrow. Most of you would know by now that Les and Deb moved out of their house last Thursday and are staying here for a week or so. They hope to set off on a trip around Australia in the next couple of weeks. Please keep Deb's Mum in your prayers as she had a bit of a set back on the weekend and was back in hospital for a couple of days.

Horsing Around

Lindsay Sloss and his girls brought 4 horses around to the farm this morning and gave all the kids a ride.  The girls were very patient and helpful to the kids, leading them around in the rather hot sun.
The kids had a fun time doing something they don't get to do every day.  Harry didn't want to go on the horse initially, but then he was crying later because he didn't want to get off.

Toowoomba Bryants Farewell

Pete blogging on behalf of slack parents.  :)

We went out to the farm this weekend for a farewell do for Jim, Mel and kids.  They have embraced the spirit of adventure and are heading off to New Zealand to seek their fortune.  Christchurch to be exact.  I was interested to note that Christchurch is known as 'The Garden City' - the same as Toowoomba.  Anyway, they are selling everything and off to a new life in a new country.
Jim & Mel decided to do some quite extensive renovations to help with selling the house, so Dad has been spending quite a lot of time in Toowoomba helping out with renos.  Les has also put in a fair bit of time on the job.
Anyway, we managed to pull them away for renovations for one afternoon and night.  Ed, Squirt and family were there, Mary, Pete, Alli and co, Jim, Mel and kids, plus of course Mum and Dad.
Les and Deb were there for a short while but unfortunately had to leave unexpectedly as Deb's Mum had a serious illness in Brisbane.

We had a lovely lunch and a delicious dinner on a fairly hot day and sat out in the shade at the front of the house, eating, drinking and watching the kids play in the pool.  Steve, Judy & little Will were also there.

After the kids were finally in bed, the big kids had a good chin wag, but were pretty much all in bed by 10:30.
We knew the kids would be up at the crack of dawn.  :)
Mary had to get a sleeping Charlie and take her to the campervan with her, since she promised Charlie she would get her - even if she was sleeping.  :)

Slip n Slide

You can see a little of the crazy slip n slide action on youtube.
